I had a spare piece of dark Uart (9×12) around my studio and decided to tackle it.  An artist friend gave it to me at the last Lorenzo Chavez workshop I attended in nearby Palo Duro Canyon.  It hadn’t fit my current work so it’s been waiting for me.  I knew it would be a different challenge as I’m normally working on beige Uart 400-500 and using an alcohol wash underpainting.

The key here was letting the paper do much of the work.  This sunset scene was perfect as the clouds and land were already darkened and mysterious. Noticing the values of the paper and choosing my palette wisely was key.  I was careful to not layer in the pastel too thickly and stepped back often to get a feel for my areas and values.

I worked from the edge of the horizon up (darkest clouds at bottom to lightest clouds at top) and then worked the landscape, keeping details minimal. The focus is on the beautiful light and sunlit clouds so I didn’t want to add details that would compete with my focal point. Uart dark is not a pure black.  (You can see my pure charcoal black tree marks at the edge of the horizon for a comparison.).  It is a nice very dark gray which really helped this painting come together quickly.  I used gentle scumbling and carving marks and had fun with no underpainting! It was easier and quicker than I thought it would be and I can’t wait to get my hands on more of this great paper. Dick Blick has it in stock here or if you’d like to try your hands at a solid toned dark surface, you could prestain your paper with a charcoal underpainting or an acrylic wash!

Tell me, have you tried Uart Dark?

xoxo
